Howrah is an industrial city in West Bengal, India. It is also the name of the Howrah Administrative District, which includes the city and its surroundings.
It is on the west bank of the Hoogli River and is Kolkata's twin city. The two cities are linked by the famous Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu), as well as two other bridges. Howrah Station, one of the major train stations also serving Kolkata is located in Howrah. The city has a population of 1,008,704 (2001).
The climate of this region is typically humid by virtue of its geographical location. Being situated on the banks of Hoogli river and within the Ganges Delta, Howrah is vulnerable because it is only a few meters above the sea level. The city has seen an increase in temperature of around 0.68 °C over the last century.
